A New Method of Diatomaceous Earth Fractionation—A Bio-Raw Material Source for Epoxy-Based Composites

The authors of this paper use an original method diatomaceous earth fractionation, which allows for obtaining a filler with specific particle size distribution. makes it possible to separate small, disintegrated and broken diatom frustules from those maintained their form in earth. study covers range tests conducted prove that such separated diatomic fraction (3–30 µm) shows features different the base diatomite (from 1 above 40 used as epoxy resin filler. We have examined mechanical properties series diatomite/resin composites, considering weight diatoms parameters composite production process. studied composites Epidian 601 cross-linked amine-based curing agent Z-1 contained 0 70% vol. or Samples were produced by being casted into silicone molds vacuum degassing conditions and, alternatively, without degassing. results shown morphology based on affects rheological systems resin. Elongation at rupture flexural stress both raised up 35%, impact strength 25%.
